Vegan Finds

Hi all! Thought I would do a little post to update you on some tasty dinners and bits I've found recently. I also discovered a good Tesco in Sheffield while we were there.  I held onto my iPhone very tightly while we walked around it though...BUT there were some great vegan bits, I just wish I'd had more money.  I found some really cheap coconut oil, £1.89 a jar!!  I've never seen it that cheap before:

I bought two as I thought it was such a good price.  It's not organic or cold pressed or anything though, the only other coconut oil I have tried before was by the Groovy Food Company and that was £6.99 for a jar half the size.  That was organic and cold pressed though. I have to say this coconut oil does not really taste or smell of coconuts!!  It's strange, the GFC one I bought had a really, really strong and almost overwhelming aura of coconuts.  I fried some mushrooms in it and nearly threw  up as it tasted like a mushroom bounty.  It was however really good for using in cakes instead of butter, so long as you like the taste of coconut lol, luckily I do when it's in cakes.  Anyway, this has been good for cooking with as it's meant to be much better for you than cooking with other oils (you can read about that here) and it's not lending a bounty taste to everything.  Definitely recommend it, if you can find it!

While I was there I also saw these:

I'd not seen these that often in the supermarket and at £1.59 I thought it would be worth a try.  I was wrong!!  I had always thought I would like vegan sushi as it contains all the things I like; rice, avocado, cucumber etc.  Unfortunately  the 'seaweed' I am used to is the sugared cabbage stuff that you get from the Chinese takeaway.  This was actual seaweed and tasted of the actual sea!! Bleugh!!  It made my kitchen reek of fish, it tasted like fish and had the texture of fish skin.  I was never a huge fish fan to begin with anyway so I really couldn't get into these.  Give me sugared cabbage any day!

Another good vegan find was this Swedish Glace Neapolitan at my local Sainsbury's.  I've noticed a lot of the supermarkets supply Swedish Glace now but only in vanilla, I've always had  to go to Holland and Barratt for  the good stuff. I was very excited to see this sitting in the freezer!  It was £2.99 but I think it was really worth it for the amount you get.

All of the flavours were lovely; chocolate, vanilla and strawberry.  They all tasted like proper icecream and my meat eating, ice cream loving boyfriend agreed :)  We ate half Friday night and the other half last night, it didn't seem right leaving leftovers!  I'd really recommend this.

I've been having a lot of veggie burgers in mixed seed bagels recently.  I pack them really high with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, vegan mayo and ketchup.  They're sooo messy to eat, I have to have a baby wipe with me when I eat these bad boys but they are really tasty.  In the pic below I've got a veggie burger with some brown rice, roasted peppers, corguette  and aubergine and loads more ketchup, mayo and hummus.  I have set myself a goal of not eating bread this week so no more giant veggie burgers for now....I LOVE these burgers though so will prob have the exact same meal sans the bagel.  Spicy Bean Burgers are the best!

This was how I started my day this morning.  I had a shot of wheat grass (whilst holding my nose) followed very quickly by a frozen banana and berry smoothie.  Wheat grass still makes me want to barf but having something to take the taste away with really helps.  I feel so much more alert after taking it too, it's great.  Thank you mum for reminding me to get back in the wheat grass habit :)

And lastly, we went to Refley woods yesterday.  We've not been before but it's just round the corner from us.  It was a really lovely walk, the kind of walk that makes us wish we had a dog :)  Here are some of the best pics I got:

Huge pile of logs with a random doggy posing on top for me :)
A Union Flag made out of sticks and logs that we stumbled across
I hope you all have a good week and achieve any goals you may have set for yourself :)  I'll report back soon with an update on mine.

    1. Haha, you're welcome! No one likes smelly seaweed :-/ Yes I've heard coconut oil is really good for your skin, I've yet to try it on my face though, I will have to give it a go. I found mine in the 'foreign foods' isle. It was near lots of Indian, Polish and Kosher bits. Near all the interesting bits basically! :) x

    2. I don't use it neat on my face. I melt it, mix with organic baby lotion, vit E and tea tree oil, then stick in fridge until set. It makes a really lovely moisturiser for about £3 a pot (bit different to the £26 a pot I used to pay for Neal's Yard stuff! X

    3. Oh wow what a great idea! I'll definitely give that a try. I've got loads of lotions and potions left from Christmas but when they run out I will have a go at making that. I really like the thought of making your own beauty products :)

  2. Wow, that is a really great price for coconut oil!! I get mine from Whole Foods and pay an arm and a leg for it. It's worth it though since it's so good for you! Good for you for doing the wheat grass shots! I don't think I could ever get on board with that. I'll stick to the green juices, ha! The smoothie looks like a perfect chaser though! And that sandwich, OMG!! Amazing! It looks so hearty and filling. Gorgeous pics from your walk, it looks like such a beautiful area! Not a bad way to spend the day ;)

    1. I wish they would open a Whole Foods in the UK!! I hear about it in so many blogs, I think the closest equivalent we have is Holland and Barratt but it's more of a supplement store than a food one.

Yeah the wheat grass is pretty tough :-/ I do feel great afterwards though, so long as I have a tasty chaser lol. We only moved here in October so we have loads more places to discover still, I'm really looking forward to it though. There are plenty of woodlands to investigate in these here parts! :)
